While this particular word string emerges occasionally, a record of it’s first use does not appear to exist, at least not a readily accessible one. It first popped into my brain in the late 1960’s, at which time I posted it on one of a number of sheets informally established for eclectic commentary in the DePaul University “Honors Lounge” (old furniture in the “garden apartment” of an old house on the campus). Subsequently, I somehow discovered that this precise phrase had been recently used in an article in some professional journal (which I would never have seen) of psychiatry or psychology. I used this expression very occasionally at the end of Amoco-internal email when I worked there as a contractor in the 1980’s-1990’s. Circa mid-1990’s, I saw this precise phrase used on a Stevenson High School (Lincolnshire, IL) outdoor quote display board. I phoned the school to find out the source, but I failed to connect with anyone who was able (or willing, anyway) to say.
